“Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.”
The more things change, the more they remain the same.
Well, yes. And no.

Like time-honored aphorisms, there is truth to it.
And a doubting question hidden in its depths.
Particularly when we consider women.
More particularly, when we consider the American
woman who has stepped forth into a new millennium.
Who
is she as we approach the third decade of the
twenty-first century, a century which leaves behind
exciting and fast-changing decades in which her youth
was born, in which her own particular essence was formed.
A century in which, despite its trials and turbulence,
was still familiar and comfortable and safe — until recently.
But those are decades now passed, decades now gone.

How is this twenty-first century American woman
different, and how is she the same as all women
who have preceded and led up to her?
