we move through life giving of ourselves to others.
parts of ourselves. bits and pieces of our hearts.
our emotions. our faith. our trust.
when fortunate, others have returned
those same bits of themselves, giving back.
we are taught to treat others as we would want
to be treated ourselves. most try hard. they do.
most ask themselves: am I being kind?
am I being sensitive? am I putting myself
in the place of the other?
is my intention honorable?
yes, most try hard.

some don’t try hard enough.
they can disappoint. yet they may see
the error of their ways. then try again.
apologetically. and as part of
the human condition,
we understand. we forgive.

yet some don’t try at all.
they think only of themselves,
leaving in their wake mountains of hurt.
broken hearts. the humiliation of others.
the dismissal of issues which matter to, and effect,
the self-confidence of others. the destruction of
